Maruti Suzuki to discontinue Alto 800: Reports
Alto 800, Maruti Suzuki India’s (MSI) entry-level model, appears to have been discontinued by the manufacturers. According to a report published in India Today, the car manufacturer has stopped making one of its best-selling hatchback model.
In a report by India Today, Maruti Suzuki India’s Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales, Shashank Srivastava said, “What we have observed is that the entry-level hatchback segment, where it (the Alto 800) operates, has been coming down over the years”. He added that the volumes declined because the cost of acquisition of vehicles in this segment went up substantially.
According to the study, it would not have been “financially viable” to upgrade the Alto 800 to conform to BS6 Phase 2 standards. The increasing cost of purchasing cars is also caused by increases in the cost of materials, the cost of transportation, and other forms of taxation.
