Honda unveil specs for EM1 with claimed 48km range: Report

Honda has officially released the specifications of its EM1 e: electric scooter after its debut at EICMA 2022. The unveiling of the EM1 e: is in line with Honda’s plan to introduce at least 10 electric two-wheelers globally by 2025, taking a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality for its motorcycle line-ups by the 2040s.

Designed for a younger demographic seeking convenient, enjoyable, and emission-free urban transportation, the ‘EM’ in EM1 e: stands for Electric Moped. Let’s dive into the details of this electric scooter.

The EM1 e: is equipped with a hub-mounted motor that delivers a continuous output of 0.58kW and a peak output of 1.7kW, enabling a top speed of 45kph. Additionally, it features an ECON mode, limiting the output to 0.86kW, providing a smoother throttle response, and reducing the top speed.

Powering the EM1 e: is Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e:, a swappable lithium-ion battery weighing approximately 10kg. The scooter comes with a 5.3kg charger that connects to a single-phase AC 100-240V domestic source, generating a maximum of 270W.

Charging time from zero to maximum is around six hours, while reaching a 25% to 75% charge takes only 2.7 hours (160 minutes). Honda claims that the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: can be charged over 2,500 times. In terms of range, the EM1 e: offers a usable range of 41.3km, extendable up to 48km when using the ECON mode.

The Honda EM1 e: measures 1,860mm in length with a 1,300mm wheelbase and a seat height of 740mm. It has a ground clearance of 135mm and weighs a mere 95kg, including the battery. The scooter features a durable steel underbone frame, a 31mm telescopic fork at the front, and twin shock absorbers at the rear for suspension.

Equipped with 90/90-12 front and 100/90-10 rear tires, the EM1 e: sports a cast aluminum front wheel and an aluminum/steel composite rear wheel. Braking is managed by a 190mm/single-piston caliper disc at the front and a 110mm drum brake at the rear, with Combined Brake System (CBS) included.

The EM1 e: showcases a distinctive design that sets it apart from its internal combustion engine counterparts. It combines smooth, organic curves in the front with a more angular rear section.

Inside, the EM1 e: features a simple digital dashboard, full LED lighting, 3.3 liters of underseat storage, a bottle holder, a USB charger, and a hook in the front apron to secure small bags. The package also includes a rear luggage rack, while buyers have the option to add a 35-liter top box for additional storage.

The Honda EM1 e: introduces an exciting and eco-friendly option for urban commuters, embodying Honda’s commitment to electric mobility. With its impressive specifications and range, it aims to cater to the needs of a young and environmentally conscious audience.
