The opening lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix F1 sprint race saw Max Verstappen and George Russell collide, resulting in a furious Verstappen calling Russell a “dickhead” after the race. The incident took place at Turn 2 as Russell overtook Verstappen to take third place. Verstappen was left with floor damage and a large hole in the sidepod of his RB19.

Russell apologized to Verstappen, saying that he had no grip at the time of the collision. But Verstappen was not satisfied with this explanation and told Russell that they all needed to leave a little space on the track. He warned Russell to expect the same kind of treatment in the future and called him a “d****head.”

Speaking in the post-race interviews, Verstappen expressed his disappointment with Russell’s actions, saying that he did not understand why Russell needed to take so much risk in lap one. Verstappen pointed out that they all had cold tyres and it was easy to lock up. He criticized Russell’s explanation of the incident and stated that the damage to his car did not look good.
